Entrapment

Natalie Alexander, 9/3/24, charcoal pencils on black paper

For this piece, I captured a dramatic monotone photograph of my friend to illustrate the contrast and despair I aimed to convey. This work is also inspired by the style and contrast found in chiaroscuro pieces created by past artists. I wanted to portray a person confined by their own thoughts.

I typically use mixed media in all my pieces, such as watercolors, collages, colored pencils, gouache, and acrylic paint. I enjoy experimenting with strong contrasts and vibrant colors. In my ongoing investigation for my AP Art class, I emphasize the reminiscing and reflection occurring in the world on various topics, both personal and universal.
